Another great dummies title, thanks for making iPhone SDK easier,
By Seattle Reader -
[...] I’m a fan of the Dummies titles. One very cool thing is once you have read one or two Dummies titles, accessing info in any new Dummies title is easy, because all the titles follow the same Dummies format and organization. I do kinda wish “for Beginner Mind” had been chosen years ago instead of “for Dummies” because “for Dummies” is sometimes seen as a bit insulting. Too late now, and “Beginner Mind” is probably too eastern a thing to sell well in the U. S.
I’ve found a clunker or two in the “for Dummies” book bin, but this title looks like another winner to me. At the table with my coffee, toast and “for Dummies” I just now read the part on persisting iPhone app data. “For Dummies” does so often make it nice and clear and easy; and persisting iPhone app data is just one more little example of who knows how many thousands of things the for Dummies series has easy-ified over the years.
Unique Offering in a Sea of Lengthy Boring Tomes,
By Mary Feltman (Indianapolis, IN) -
I purchased the book for my 22 year old nephew who is in college and he’s already got an app going and is working on getting it into the App Store. He’s majoring in business but has taken some CS classes and likes tinkering with techy stuff. He also of course has an iPhone. We were talking a few months ago and he said all the CS kids were buzzing about building apps (and making money) and he wanted to try. He had looked at all the other books on iPhone app development and felt like they required too much prerequisite knowledge that he didn’t have or in his words were “too lame” on the fun front. Well he loves this book and some of his classmates who are CS students are also using it. He said the coverage is perfect - not overwhelming, walks him through the getting started stuff like downloading the IDE and working with Xcode, Cocoa and Objective-C. the best part was the book showed him only what he needed to know - he didn’t have to buy and read another 400 page book on Xcode. He said the book features a couple of apps and that you get going on a small app right away - he said that he was able to do the small app quickly which helped him grasp the overall fundamentals. Now he’s into the stuff about what makes a good phone app (versus a desktop app)which his classmates are digging and the information on actually getting the app into the AppStore which sounds almost harder than the actual app creation. Who knew I could buy my nephew a book that would make him as happy as if I had bought him a game for his Wii?
